STATISTICS:
Almost three-quarters of maternal deaths globally are due to five major complications of pregnancy and delivery—-hemorrhage, infection/sepsis, complications from induced abortion, hypertensive disorders related to pregnancy, i.e. eclampsia, and prolonged or obstructed labor.
According to a 2000 UN Report, each year, women undergo an estimated 50 million abortions, 20 million of which are unsafe; some 78,000 women die and millions suffer injuries and illness as a result.

My mother was diagnosed with breast cancer when I was six years old. The doctors said that she had six months to live. She ended up living for three years and, at one point, the doctors even thought that she might be cured. The cancer finally got her when I was nine years old. She passed away and her last words were, I did all this for my children.

When I was sixteen, I found a part of her journal and learned that she had been taking experimental drugs in order to continue living and being present in my life. She was the strongest woman I have ever known, and I am proud to be her daughter.

"Hail to the Lioness" is my observation of all mothers and women who have acted as my surragate mothers since my own passed away. It is also a celebration and expression of love for these role models who helped shape me. I think it's important for children who come from a single parent home, or who do not have a strong parental figure in their life, to know that they can reach out to others. These strangers could end up loving and caring for them as much as their own parents would have done.
