Changing Lives
Imagining Ourselves asked young women: "What defines your generation of women?” Millions not only answered, they roared!

We sought to spotlight young women’s inspirational stories, their leadership, connect advocacy groups with the broader public, and establish community among the first global generation of women and our success only brings more bounce in our step.

As we sum up Imagining Ourselves , our participants unanimously declare that the project has changed lives. Women world over have told us they feel like they are not alone in the struggle to create a better world, that their combined voices, amplify each individual voice,. And they realize the need to engage in global conversations about issues that affect women.

Imagining Ourselves offered hope to an Austrian single mother, Andrea Huber. It stoked the confidence of Rutendo Mudzamiri from Zimbabwe , in her goal to become a community leader. It motivated Mechelle Carey from the US, to fight for the rights of mothers in the workplace.

In 2007 we conducted a survey to gauge the impact of Imagining Ourselves. 72 percent of women reported being more aware of issues important to young women globally. 73 percent reported three or more personal changes resulting from participating in the exhibit, and over half of participants surveyed reported taking three or more actions towards positive social change as a result of participating in the exhibit.

We know from the studies we conducted that Imagining Ourselves changed many
lives. For me, it opened up entirely new horizons in terms of what kind of
impact I could have in the world. When the museum and I first started the
project, I was just beginning my career, full of dreams about making a
difference, but not sure how to actualize them. Today, millions of audience
members later, I no longer doubt the difference that individuals and small
groups can make just by having good ideas and following through on them.
I've lived it--I've seen others live it. I have nothing but the deepest
gratitude to all of our participants and community members for all of the
inspiration and creativity -- you have made many dreams possible.

The Changing Lives section has really struck a chord with me. Stories such as Andrea Huber's and Assabah Khan's help me realize every time I read them that there are women all over the world fighting their own battles and emerging winners. We all have our trials and tribulations but ultimately it’s how we face and overcome them that matters. It is so easy to get lost in our daily battles but these stories will surely inspire their readers to move ahead with renewed hope.

I believe firmly in the power of media to change the world. I believe that well told stories change the way we perceive issues. I believe that firsthand narratives on social issues allow us to identify and understand issues in ways that abstract, academic analysis cannot. And yet-- it's nearly impossible to measure the impact of the media on social change. Here are a few stories,

Wow! I was brought to tears by Zena's story "Giving Hope" at imaginingourselves.

You are all absolutely remarkable. Imagining Ourselves has changed my perspective on the abilities of young women today. It gives me so much hope for the future.
