Writing about sensitive issues and displaying one's thoughts for the world to see takes courage. I live in Lahore, a...
Writing for Imagining Ourselves was empowering - but also terrifying. The stories appear on computer screens and are rootless and transient. However, I realized early on that Imagining Ourselves created a comforting and open space for dialogue.
Imagining Ourselves changed my outlook on issues affecting women globally. Many of us are still trying to understand ourselves. We have a tendency to get caught up in our own daily lives and forget about other women and the issues affecting them. Imagining Ourselves continuously jolted me to consciousness. Seeing stories from so many different women inspired me to turn this newfound knowledge into action.
All these interesting and inspiring stories also made it intimidating to expose my writing to the eyes of others. Could I inspire others in the same way? The community on Imagining Ourselves was so receptive and took the time to pay attention to what I had to say. Their responsiveness gave me an incredible sense of power.
As a writer, Imagining Ourselves and its contributors have given me confidence to publish my work. If I don't, nobody will know my story. You have to speak out in order to be heard and the International Museum of Women is a place that lets your voice be heard.
