Brooke White and Susie Meserve

 Media Center
Our piece is collaborative, created by two women of the same generation and two close friends. It is also a piece about two separated sisters. In both these regards our submission speaks to the bonds between women that strengthen and fortify them, bonds which define our generation (and probably all generations) of women.

The subjects the film touches on – loss, longing, separation, sexuality, foreign landscapes – are less indicative of our generation in particular than they are of all generations of women, but the media we’ve used to render (digital video, photo manipulation software, etc.) are current tools. Thus, we hope there is a quality of timelessness to the piece even as its form is firmly rooted in the 21st century. As Brooke says, “It is the understanding and the fusion of both the old and the new that defines our future of art making.”

Sure, I think it is sad. When I wrote the text I was envisioning two women who're separated, perhaps growing up--or at least growing--away from one another. But trying to connect through letters. I'm not sure exactly why Brooke's footage inspired that in me, but it did, and it felt like a sad thing, to be missing someone like that. It's about longing. I love the way letters capture that.

This was nice to watch but it felt kind of sad? Was it meant to be?

Great to hear the feedback from you all! Some people wondered where the footage was from and all of it is from Tanzania and Kenya, where i was working on some projects last summer. I do think families are more separated in the world today than ever before. There will always be aspects of our families which bind us together but due to technology and economical pressures we are physically far away.

Thanks for your words. It's really nice to know people are watching and enjoying the piece. The footage is from Africa--Brooke filmed it last summer (right Brooke?). She can say more about that when she logs on. The voice and text are mine; after watching some of Brooke's unedited footage I wrote a poem and recorded it. Brooke put the two pieces (footage and audio) together.
Masha (Russia)
I agree! It's very relaxing to watch. What is the voice on the film?
