Give Women an Opportunity
Mechelle Carey
United StatesGALLERYCONVERSATION
This means that until you give yourself the oxygen needed to survive, you will not be able to effectively help others.
My submission was inspired by my experiences as a single, working mother constantly juggling my profession with parenting. My secret is that I don't try to do it all on my own - I always ask for help when I need it.
Too often women try to do it all on their own. Even worse, if they don't succeed, they think of themselves as failures. I have found success in my personal and professional life because I relied on others many times. I relied on my boss to work with me on my schedule, my family and friends for baby-sitting, and my neighbors for friendship and a helping hand.
When my story launched on the Imagining Ourselves exhibit, I was instantly connected with thousands of women worldwide. I received a lot of encouraging comments from women of diverse backgrounds and discovered that many faced the same challenges.
My employer, Best Buy, did a lot to support me as well. They sent my story to over 1,000 employees. Not only did I connect with women thousands of miles away, Imagining Ourselves helped me reach people I work with daily. My husband, also a Best Buy employee, forwarded the story to my boss, who forwarded it on to his boss.
