IDEA Empowers Women with Leprosy
IDEA is an international human rights, advocacy, and educational non-profit, founded and led primarily by individuals who have been affected by leprosy. Look at their Oral History Project on their web site, to learn about the challenges people continue to face, although there is a cure for the disease. Support IDEA's Global Campaign to Eliminate the Stigma Associated with Leprosy, through our grass roots efforts in Africa, Asia, the United States and Latin America.
Young Women Leading Change
Support the World YWCA's Leadership Development programs for girls and young women around the world.
STATISTICS:
According to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, breast augmentation ruled the list of top cosmetic surgical procedures for women in the US with a total of 402,946 surgeries in 2006, followed by liposuction with 364,610 surgeries in the same year.
According to a 2007 report by the Japanese Health, Labor and Welfare Ministry, 15% or one in seven women aged between 20 and 24 has inflicted some form of injury on herself, in such ways as cutting wrists.
Cutting Along the Lines
Regina José Galindo
GuatemalaGALLERYCONVERSATION
In this performance a plastic surgeon draws lines on my body. They are the cut-out lines that he would then follow during my cosmetic surgery.

The surgeon points out my defects and the changes I would have to make in order to be "beautiful."

In Venezuela, in particular, there is an obsessive cult of beauty. People are so preoccupied with how they look they will spend a great deal of their money on things like beauty products and plastic surgery.

***

The performance was made possible with the collaboration of Dr. Billy Spence at the Primer Festival de Arte Corporal, Caracas, Venezuela, 2005.
