Generations of Women in Zimbabwe

It wasn’t until the Beijing Conference in October 1994 that women came together to fight against abuse and for emancipation in political and social areas. It was at this conference that the disbandment of colonialism in regards to African women was emphasized. Gender equity and the empowerment of women through maximum access to education were campaigned for during this conference.
The developments brought about by the Beijing Conference have paved the way for many women to take charge in Ministerial posts, hence creating opportunities for many young women by advocating for the girl child’s rights. Since all these developments, young women in my country have had many more opportunities available to them, such as greater access to education and resources.
In the days of our mothers and our grandmothers, women’s talents were confined to the kitchen and to the household chores when they were not in the fields for farming purposes. Our grandmothers’ and our mothers’ generations were never given the chance to attain a good education, which is why most mothers now are pursuing their dreams by going to colleges and universities in the evening so that they can make up for lost time and privileges.
My generation has a better forum for expression than our mothers and grandmothers did because of the laws being passed for the freedom of the girl child. It is crucial to find more platforms like these where women from all walks of life can discuss and motivate each other to make things happen in their lives and in the world. In turn there can be more women who will speak for others.
