Generations of Women in Zimbabwe
Rutendo Precious Mudzamiri
República de ZimbabweGALERÍACONVERSACIÓN
Defining my generation of women, especially in my part of Africa, one has to understand what the situation was for women prior to their emancipation.

I am from Zimbabwe; in the 1980s, even after the independence, men were regarded as the only ones who were supposed to make decisions in the house, in the community, and about national issues. Women were non-existent in terms of education and leadership positions. On a national level the woman’s vote was not considered an important issue, and worse, in her own home she was never listened to. For example, it was taboo for any woman to defend her children to her husband. Culturally, women were supposed to agree with their husbands and always be submissive in every way regardless of her feelings.

It wasn’t until the Beijing Conference in October 1994 that women came together to fight against abuse and for emancipation in political and social areas. It was at this conference that the disbandment of colonialism in regards to African women was emphasized. Gender equity and the empowerment of women through maximum access to education were campaigned for during this conference. The conference was especially crucial for women in my country because even after our independence in 1980, the few women in politics had no real access to political power. Therefore the women in power had no influence over the growth and development of their society and culture. Another issue was that most women were not educated at that time, since most left their homes during the liberation struggle to be “mujibhas”, the people who would cook for the men at war.

The developments brought about by the Beijing Conference have paved the way for many women to take charge in Ministerial posts, hence creating opportunities for many young women by advocating for the girl child’s rights. Since all these developments, young women in my country have had many more opportunities available to them, such as greater access to education and resources.

In the days of our mothers and our grandmothers, women’s talents were confined to the kitchen and to the household chores when they were not in the fields for farming purposes. Our grandmothers’ and our mothers’ generations were never given the chance to attain a good education, which is why most mothers now are pursuing their dreams by going to colleges and universities in the evening so that they can make up for lost time and privileges. I know of many talented women, especially in my field of arts and business, who are now exploring avenues and working late despite several household chores that they may have to deal with in addition to achieving their once abandoned dreams. In my country, women of my generation are exploring their talents because of the resources that have been put in place for them by the older generation. This generation of young women in their 20s and 30s is a more empowered, free, and educated one, and it is not confined to many cultural beliefs.

My generation has a better forum for expression than our mothers and grandmothers did because of the laws being passed for the freedom of the girl child. It is crucial to find more platforms like these where women from all walks of life can discuss and motivate each other to make things happen in their lives and in the world. In turn there can be more women who will speak for others. Despite all the challenges, my generation of women is becoming more focused and determined to make great things happen out of their lives.

Now I would like to offer some words of inspiration and encouragement:
No matter what happens, I mean no matter under what circumstance, resolve to be a woman of great faith with strength, passion, standards, and resilience. Never ever give up, it is when a sponge is squeezed that it brings out content, this remains the same today in the spirit, soul, body and mind. It is only when you are hard pressed that the best in you is released, only when you keep the faith, do not give up and press towards the goal without looking back.

Celebrate your success and empower more women as well. The more empowered women we have in this world, the more educated they are, the more role models we can create for coming generations. Empowerment is not just for your personal spirit, soul, body and mind but also for helping more and more women around the globe. As women, the only way to continue with the story of empowerment, we have to be content with our abilities and give others the chance to be themselves. Women—make the best happen for yourselves and other people around you.

of the conference will be to celebrate the various victories that have been won since then and to reflect on the challenges that remain, with the focus on creating inter-generational linkages.

Rutendo, congrants, you bring out the fact that we need to celebrate our achievements as women, there have been many of them. In Nairobi, we are gearing for the The Nairobi +21 initiative that seeks to mark the 21st anniversary of the 3rd UN World Women's Conference, which was hosted by the Government of Kenya and held in Nairobi in 1985. The purpose of marking the 21st anniversary of
