Self
Every so often we catch a glimpse of ourselves… whether in a quiet moment with friends, or quickly glancing at the mirror each morning before rushing off to start the day. Who is it that what we see?

The pieces in this section are intimate portraits of young women coming to terms with who they are, and consciously deciding who they want to become. Here you can read Amelia Walker’s humorous poetry about finding confidence in a mixed-sex gym-- or watch Jessica Lagunas’ videos that subtly poke-fun at the world of make-up and fashion.

On a more serious note, read Hafsat Abiola’s interview with Amina Lawal, a young Nigerian woman sentenced to death by stoning after being accused of adultery. Even after her acquittal, Amina comments to Hafsat that she has no dreams for the future; she hasn’t been brought up to have dreams for herself.

Amina’s story shows us that our relationship with ourselves is not just a subject for self-help books or trendy magazines. The foundation of all positive social change starts with an individual act of courage—choosing to become the person you want to be in the world.
