In thinking about the key factors that define this generation, it is almost impossible not to compare it to our mother’s and grandmother’s generation. According to an in-depth analysis of results from the Pew Global Attitudes surveys, generational differences fuel much of current social and political tension in Western Europe and the United States over globalization, nationalism and immigration.

Many young women today feel that their lives are extremely different from their mother’s lives. They are able to take advantage of opportunities that were not available to their mothers. Itzel Martínez notes that in Mexican culture, women are traditionally “raised for matrimony.” Itzel’s mother followed this path, as did her mother’s friends. Itzel herself says: “Seeing my mother’s life, I have had the strength to take control of my own, to cling to my decisions, my desires, whatever the price.”
