One of the key words that define today’s generation of young women is freedom. Our generation has more access to education, formal employment, and alternative choices about family and personal life, than any previous generation of women. Women’s enrolment in higher education has increased markedly in most regions of the world. In the Caribbean and in Western Asia, for example, it has surpassed that of men; In South America, it is equal to that of men. What are we doing with this new access?

Women like Sampurna Chattarji from India feel that they belong to a generation with “the freedom to go against the grain.” Elda Stanco, from Italy and Venezuela, feels she has the freedom to “bend and break what have been considered boundaries.” This is a generation with more choices than ever before, and young women are taking advantage of the options available to them to make pursue paths that were not open to their mothers.
