Devotion
Religion is in resurgence around the world. How does it affect us as young women? What need does it fill? While the newspapers are full of harrowing tales about fundamentalisms of all shapes and sizes, the entries in this section also show the positive side of religion. In many parts of the world, young women are claiming (or reclaiming) their faith and use it as a source of strength in their lives or their communities.

Anila Umar, a Pakistani Canadian, finds strength in her Islamic heritage by reclaiming the notion of jihad as valiant personal struggle and journey, rather than as a form of extremist violence, as it is sometimes invoked in the western media. Yen Chua, a prominent Singaporean painter, professes to have discovered her spiritual self while on a trek through the Himalayas. She now creates exquisite, Buddhist-inspired paintings, cultivating a sense of peace and connectedness with nature amidst the hustle and bustle of urban life.

What does faith or devotion mean to you?
