Ali Smith, from the USA, writes that choosing whether or not to become a parent is one of the most important decisions a young woman will ever make. Does one choose to become a mother? Or is the notion of choice about childbearing a luxury only accorded to people of a certain socioeconomic status?

Jamie Koebel, a Native Canadian woman, talks about the Cree baby-naming rituals she performed in the setting of a modern, ascetic hospital—in the hopes of keeping cultural traditions alive for her family. In today’s times, how can mothers effectively pass down cultural heritage to their children -- or should they?
