Determined to break the mold
Laura Boushnak
PalestineGALLERYCONVERSATION
I see my generation of women as more independent than the previous one. My maternal grandmother married at the age of thirteen.

A mother of three at seventeen, she was widowed and moved back to her parents’ home. Refusing to remarry, she taught sewing to support her family. My mother got married when she was twenty and worked part time as a hairdresser at home while bringing up my two sisters and me.

We were raised in Kuwait, a religious and conservative country where women are brought up believing they have less opportunity than men to build an independent life. I was determined to break the mould and choose a profession that would allow me to express myself creatively and be financially independent.

Working as a photojournalist for more than five years has enabled me to document other people’s lives and better understand myself and the world I live in. My work allows me to reflect the way I perceive myself as an Arab woman fighting to overcome the challenges, disappointments and limitations I have been faced with. Determination is the key to happiness and through my work that is what I hope to instill in others.
