The Gap Between Generations
Melania Messina
ItalyGALLERYCONVERSATION
In Italy, during the seventy’s, women won many battles to gain equal opportunities and equal treatment, and yet I think that we still have not truly been able to adequately influence social and cultural ways of thinking.

As far as my generation is concerned, my opinion is that there is a big cultural gap between our mothers and ourselves; we are more aware of our rights and we have greater control over our lives. At the same time, our increased access to equal economic, political, and cultural power is still ruled by a society that is strongly dominated by males. Catholic morals have a strong influence on social behaviour in my country, and even though we all have experimented Catholicism’s inclination towards misogyny, we have also been overwhelmed by the constant use of the female body in visual communication and merchandise.

I think that there are tradeoffs, for instance my mother stayed at home to raise her children, but she didn’t feel pressured to have a brilliant career. I am trying to do my best with my only son without any social support of any kind, and at the same time I do my best with my work, where I am dealing with business rules that I did not set and were thought of by and for men. I don’t wish that I had my mother’s life, but still things could be better!
