On March 8, we hosted a small gathering of women in Beijing at Yoga Yard, a yoga studio I started with a friend 3 1/2 years ago. There were 20-25 women present, and we represented a number of countries including Belgium, Canada, China, France, Italy, Israel, and the United States.
We had 6 women artists showing their work (photography, video art, feng shui, oil paintings and pencil drawings). We showed the website online, the Imagining Ourselves video, and held a discussion about what defines this generation of women. We shared stories and experiences about work, career, family, cultural and generational changes. A number of women from China commented that the pace of change and activity in China is so fast that there’s never time or circumstance ordinarily to consider questions like the one we were discussing. For them, this was a question that never entered their minds. Many present said the website and activities opened their eyes and minds, and one participant said she went home and felt quite inspired to reach out more to women across this platform. I also received feedback that our discussion wasn’t long enough! Some of us are thinking that perhaps we can do this again, or make this into a monthly forum for discussion.
