Responses to 9/11

The women painters from Mithila paint images of the Gods and Goddesses and traditional symbols and motifs. In the recent years the artists have started commenting, reacting and recording social events and conditions.

The most surprising paintings are the strikingly different responses to 9/11. These responses come form an remote area that barely has electricity in all the villages.

Leela Devi, one of the oldest active painters who usually paints cosmological and legendary figures, offers a compelling image of the attack, complete with billowing smoke, fire, and falling debris.

Shalinee Kumari in her painting describes the global reach of terrorism. She draws many of her ideas for her paintings from listening to the BBC and discussing the programs she hears with her peers (especially with her very close friend, Pinki Kumari, and her older brother at university.
