The challenges I face today are diffent from those of my mother and grandmother. I think the challenges I face have to do with professional, educational and financial accomplishments. For example, my grandmother was not expected to go to college and prove herself professionally, or support herself financially.

Instead, she was expected to get married and have a family and rely on her husband for financial support. I believe the same is true for my mother, as she was coming of age in an era of women transitioning from family life to professional and was very much caught in the middle. Most women I know have undergraduate degrees and just as many of these women have advanced degrees and support themselves financially. I think having an undergraduate degree now in our culture is an expected accomplishment, having an advanced degree is now how we prove ourselves intellectually and break into professions that are only available to us to pursue after completing a masters or PhD. My challenge was to believe in myself, and free myself from traditional values that where only available to my previous generation of women. My challenge was to pursue a liberal arts degree, to pursue developing my voice as an artist in an MFA program, to challenge the financial and economic circumstances that have faced me as a single woman, financing two degrees, risking financial circumstances to pursue my work as an artist.

The generation of the present and the past are much different. Women in the past were excepted to take care of their husband and their children. However, the society expects the women to pursue a successful career and many of the women's education are advancing to Master and Doctorate degrees.
