I believe that women are bell weathers of society -- what happens to women, and how they fare in society, is an indication of what is happening more generally and how society is faring.

We need to observe what happens to women if we are to understand the direction of any society. At the core of progress is the status of women. Stronger women build stronger nations.

Women have a profound impact on the life of their families, their communities and nations. They also have a vital impact on each other. Everyday increasing numbers of us are defying conventional lines based on race, ethnicity, religion and nationality and are uniting to create a complex network and system of support that reaches from one corner of the globe to the other. Through Women for Women International, thousands of women connect across the globe to sponsor a woman survivor of war. Our sponsors recognize that women face the brunt of challenges during war. Civilians make up ninety percent of those injured or killed in today’s conflicts such as war and civil strife. Women and children are seventy-five percent of these civilians. Millions of women are subject to rape and violence, are displaced and left widowed or without loved ones. Women worldwide are struggling to rebuild their lives.

With the news of bombs and missiles falling in distant places, we might feel that we are worlds apart. The fact is, we share great common ground. The growing network of women helping women is so critical. We need one another!

There are many ways to support one another. Reach out to help your neighbor, sponsor a woman, or even begin to participate in Imagining Ourselves for the discussion on Culture and Conflict: Uniting Women Across Boundaries. Through this special online discussion, you will have the opportunity engage in a conversation with and to read stories, view paintings and documentary pieces by women who are survivors of these conflicts and who are working to create a more harmonious world.

You will also have the chance to take action yourself and find out about how to get involved with numerous organizations that are working on behalf women worldwide. This month’s online dialogue will also focus on the nature of identity in our global era and the impact of globalization is having on our lives.

Welcome to the growing global community of women. Your voice, your stories—and your friendship with others in this community—is vital for our shared future.

Living in your own truth is what I think makes women stong. Independent thought.

Khali,
I think that you are a strong woman because of the fact that you are able to live through violence and fear. To be able to do this is remarkable and I have deep respect and compassion for you. Keeping you and your family safe is the most important thing that you can do. I agree with Jenny that it is essential that strong women support each other globally. Stay strong, Khali!

The other day I walked behind 10 college women. For the 20 minutes I was behind them all they talked about was the new diet plan they were on, and how little they could eat.
Being a strong woman is about choosing to STOP shrinking and START living in our totality-out wholeness on ALL levels. I agree, we need to start remembering that we are all one. That it is time to come together globally. :)

Being a "Strong Woman" for me means being happy where I am. As a woman who had a successful career working for a large company I now stay at home to raise my children. The difficult choices we make as mothers makes me a "Stronger Woman".
