Every two seconds somewhere in the world, a woman is subjected to violence. At least one in three women has been beaten, coerced into sex, or otherwise abused in her lifetime.

In Ciudad Juarez and Chihuahua Mexico, over 400 women and girls have been killed or disappeared in the past thirteen years.

An alarming number of these cases remain unsolved.

There is hope amidst the tragedy. The mothers in Ciudad Juarez and Chihuahua City have led a brave and inspiring campaign with a simple message: justice not excuses.

With upcoming elections in July, this government must effectively respond in policy and practice to ensure that the victims are not forgotten. The time to act is now.

In today’s society, sexual violence against women isn’t so rare. Every year, large numbers of women are becoming victims of some kind of violent act. This is a big problem in our society.

I read a book in Spanish about the murders in Ciudad Juarez, Mexico called "Huesos en el Desierto" . The book exposed a cruel world of impunity and a dark intricate web of corruption in this city where 400 women have been murdered or are missing and no one seems to do anything about it. As a mother, a woman, and a Mexican at heart, I would like to raise awareness to this sad story.
