Las mujeres, especialmente las más jóvenes, sufren más desempleo que los hombres y por un período mayor.
Estadísticas globales recientes muestran que las mujeres continúan aumentando su participación en puestos gerenciales, pero el índice de progreso es lento y desigual.

5:00 - 8:00: I wake up as early and heat some water to bathe the children. Aisha, my eldest daughter helps me now as she is older. I prepare their breakfast. It is usually tea and  bread, or sometimes I give them Akamu (oatmeal) and Akara (bean cake). After the children have eaten I take them to school. Thankfully it is not too far from here and we walk it.

10:00 :  As soon as I return I start to clean the house and the compound. Only three of my children go to school so  I still have Ibrahim to watch over. Sometimes while I bathe or so other household chores, he stays with his father at the gate, but it still is very hectic. I prepare lunch for Ibrahim and my maigida (man of the house).

11:00 - 13:00 : I usually make chin-chin and puff-puff pastries to sell. I don't think it is good for a woman to sit down and do nothing. I use the money from the sales to pay for my children's books and school things. The other day my children could not go to school because I had not paid for their books  Even though my husband works, the money is still not enough. I'd like to get work as a cleaner or nanny somewhere because I need money.

13:30 -14:00: I pick up the children from school and feed them lunch. I continue with my household chores as they play around. I wish I could go and get my hair done but I recently paid for the children's school uniforms. I guess I will have to wait till my husband gets paid. If I had more money I would like to open a small store where I can sell some food and do a bit of petty trading to have more money for my family

16:00: I go to pick up Aisha from her extra lessons. She is doing well in school and I am very proud of her. I hope and pray she will do well in life.

19:00 - 21:00: I start preparing dinner, feed the children and then they go to bed.

22:00: While I lay down on the bed next to my husband, he tells me he wants to marry another wife. This upsets me a lot. I've had children for him. If I wasn't; able to bear children I would understand but we have two boys and two girls. What more does he want? I told him that if he marries another woman he must provide a house for me and my children and pay for our upkeep. I will not stay in the same house as another wife.

I sometimes wish my family was not so far away. Then they could help me somehow, even if it is just to watch the children while I work around the house.  I like being a mother even though it is not always easy. Being with my children everyday makes me happy and gives me great joy.

Hello, I watched the film called Shouting silent tonight. I understand your emphasis on the loss of a mother and all the things that mothers do for their children. It is terrific to see that many of the children valued education and that...
