A Map with Gaps (26 min)

After my father's untimely death at the age of 44, I was raised in a household of women.

Because there was no longer a male presence in our house, I realized that strength manifests itself differently in women and has a potency that reaches beyond the physical.

In making A Map with Gaps, I wished to tell my father's story but through the filter of my own faded childhood memory of him. I narrate his journey in a souped-up Ford Anglia called "Supervan" through the Soviet Russia in the early 1970s.

Essentially, it is a catalogue of minor disasters; a story that demonstrates that fact can indeed be stranger than fiction and that sometimes the grey area between the two is the most interesting place to explore - especially if you had forgotten to bring a map.

Combining archive audio recordings, drama reconstruction, still photography and animation, this surreal and comic tale unfolds across 12,000 miles, 14 countries and 26 very peculiar days.

My films are factual but also wander into the territory of imagination and dreams. I am inspired by more creative approaches to documentary film making, and I hope to contribute a new voice to the form. I think women with their gift of empathy, make excellent documentary makers and story tellers.
