They then designed a T-shirt with the same image, but added a clenched fist in the center of the black cross.
We were able to start a powerful social movement by simply transferring the protest from telephone poles to T-shirts. By employing T-shirts as moving statements, people use them to communicate their personalities, politics, and identities.
For several months we handed out these T-shirts at concerts, festivals, and forums. We also photographed people wearing and reacting to the T-shirts. We wanted to document the effect of a visual project involving clothing.. In many ways, this project is a study in how people incorporate social issues into their daily lives.
The symbol on our T-shirts confronted people with a pressing social issue, and they were forced to choose their degree of involvement. They could ignore us, talk to us, buy a T-shirt, or actually wear one and express their solidarity with us.
