This film challenges viewers to think, ‘What's so hip about wearing camo?" and uncovers some fascinating answers about America's historic love affair with the fabric of war and violence.
Children's toys, video games, bomber jackets and camouflage apparel are just some of the ways in which the military has seeped its way into popular culture. Initially worn in the 60s and 70s as symbolic resistance to the Vietnam War, contemporary camouflage clothing and other military paraphernalia has since invaded our public and private spaces.
This film born was out of Women of Color Resource Center's (WCRC) Peace and International Solidarity Program and its Gender and Militarism Working Group desire to make militarism tangible and teachable. In May 2005 WCRC decided to put on an anti-war fashion show to create awareness on the normalization of militarism in our everyday lives. The fashion show was marked by three runways: "Camo Nation", "Women in a Militarized Society" and "Fashion Resistance." "Camo Nation" showcased militarization in popular fashion through models dressed in militarized jackets, aviator sunglasses and various camouflage designs. "Women in a Militarized Society" looked at roles that women take on in a militarized society represented by models playing the patriotic mother and wife, the sexualized entertainer for the troops and Rosie the Riveter (supporting the war industry). "Fashion Resistance" was an exciting finale that used the creativity of local designers and organizations to create outfits resisting war and militarism. Attended by over 400 people, the fashion show was a huge success and created such a buzz that WCRC decided to continue the project with a documentary entitled Fashion Resistance to Militarism. As a generation faced with increasing war, it is our responsibility to resist the integration and normalization of militarism into our cultures and communities, and to educate the mostly low-income communities targeted by military recruitment efforts. We are committed to a long-term vision of advancing a gendered perspective on peace and globalization and to mobilizing women of color as a force for peace. | | | ضعي علم على هذه القصة للمراجعة | |

Fashion plays a major role for woman, and I think that it always will. When you go to an interview, you don't wear something you would wear to a night club, you make sure you look presentable and sophisticated enough to accomplish the job...
