our great grandmothers
lie within these eternal walls
the purity of death
of the cool, white stone
scriptural ballads engraved
chronicles of infinite wisdom

my grandfather's wake:
i shook the hand of the poet.
months later i would return
to walk between
the stones
behind mirrored lenses
to hide from you
and from walls that
harbored yet another
bouquets of flowers
hung dehydrated
weeds crunched under
my weight
between the sound of
hollow wind
passing through the graves
i heard laughter
whispers

do you really believe you will
have a place here amongst us?
lie within these eternal walls
