The history of who I am
Meredith L. King
United StatesGALLERYCONVERSATION
My generation of women is defined by access. Just as I can choose where to use the bathroom, or sit on the bus, I can also choose...
But with greater access to choices and opportunities must come greater self-awareness. When someone else is defining your identity and your desires for you, it is both a blessing and a curse to not have to contend with them on your own. Sometimes our desires are ugly. Sometimes they are frightening, and sometimes they go against everything that we thought we knew. They come from the deepest parts of us that don’t always follow the rules of society.
As much as women my age have access to fulfill many of our wants, sometimes just accepting that our desires are okay and that we have a right to want the things we want is a struggle. As a feminist-activist, a thinker, feeler, writer, and performer, I want my work to help create a world where people’s actions are motivated by our similar experiences as human beings, rather than our differences on the surface.
