December 12: On Guadalupe Virgin’s Day we go to church for a service. On this day, boys and girls get special costumes and they dress like ancient Indians. The legend says that between the 9th and 12th of December 1531, the Virgin of Guadalupe appeared to the Indian Juan Diego to ask him to build a sanctuary for the Catholic-followers in the Cerro of Teyepac (Tepeyac Mountain). People celebrate every December 12th as Gualdalupe Virgin’s Day.
December 13-December 23: The only thing the family talks about is the Christmas dinner, the ingredients, the preparation, the wines, the presents each one wishes to receive, the piñatas, the karaoke, the music, and the clothes we are going to wear. We play Christmas carols all day long. Every member of the family is given a list of ingredients which they have to procure for the Christmas dinner. My mother, aunts and cousins start making arrangements for the big day: December 24.
December 24: It is a day of last minute shopping and making all the last minute arrangements. There is a lot of activity in the house with people rushing around and music playing in the background. We eat breakfast and lunch out since the family kitchen is closed.
We all gather around 6:00 pm, and pray to thank God for all the good fortune we had during the present year. We also ask for only one thing: good health, because we believe that if we have good health, we can achieve everything else in life.
