I grew up between cultures, in a shifting, liminal space. My generation were the children of political exiles. My dad had been a political prisoner in South Africa, and was subsequently banned, so my sister and I were born in England.
What I did not live through in either of these places, was their liberation struggle. So whilst I am very much a product of Southern Africa, I have the luxury too of my English heritage, and of my middle classness – which means I have been protected from much of the darker sides of both Zimbabwe (or Rhodesia as it was before independence) and South Africa. Zimbabwe, of course, sadly, is now going through a new liberation struggle.
