My mother taught me how to breathe
Am
In the beginning, she created me
as a divine image of life
A unique creation of a miracle
A Queen

She was and always has been.
Like she taught me, my grandmother taught her
How to breathe when the winds were blowing
Negativity in her face,
When all she had was her name-
And some grace;
just enough to raise her head to the Heavens
And pray.

She would
Inhale distorted truths
Inhale contradictory pursuits
Until she could no longer take it.
But all she had to do was
Exhale, and the strength of her soul
Made the earth shudder.

I
Like my grandmother who taught my mother,
Who taught me,
My soul is a warrior of sorts.

It identifies and celebrates
With the strength of yesterday,
That delights in living for today—
By redefining our spaces.

Unlike yesterday, my today is paving
Unique visions
On familiar terms;
I'm not inhaling toxic concerns
From the likes of deadly agendas.

I
My mother taught me how to breathe:
I learn from her mistakes of yesterday,
From what patriarchy didn't let her face.
Silenced souls in long dresses and pretty bonnets
I breathe for
Broken souls in wayside gutters and black and blue alleys
I breathe for
Lost souls in search of abstract miracles, abstract leaders
