The Day I Found Out About Kayla Mae
Jennifer Falcon
United StatesGALLERYCONVERSATION
My stepfather was physically abusive and an alcoholic. So my great-grandfather was the one I clung to.
My people believe that when someone passes on to the next world they can come back and visit and see how their loved ones are doing. And one night I had dreamt of him. I stood with him outside my house. And before I knew it I was standing in front of my boyfriend’s house and my grandfather turned into an eagle and flew up to the top of his roof. As he looked down on me I looked down as well and saw a huge belly, a pregnant belly, on me.
I had run away from my mother’s home for good when I was fifteen and ended up in California with my father. There I was thrown into a house with a man I hadn’t spoken to in years. A man I barely knew. A man who, very much like my stepdad, had his own addiction and control issues. I would learn that my father was addicted to meth a few months after arriving to California. Let down once again and defeated, I felt horribly alone.
